Wear Red Day

Friday, Feb. 5 is National Wear Red Day and the entire month of February is American Heart Month. Go Red For Women, powered by the American Heart Association’s research, educates and connects millions of women of all ages. With one out of three women still dying from heart disease, we continue to fight this No. 1 killer by helping women turn simple choices into life-saving actions. Whether it’s eating healthier, exercising more, reducing our cholesterol, or quitting smoking, Go Red helps women make these choices for themselves and each other.

The key message for this year’s campaign is Speak Up to Save Lives. So on Feb. 4 and 5 during the lunch hour there will be cosmetologists set up in St. Petersburg and Tampa painting women’s lips red, encouraging them to advocate for heart health. Along with the cosmetologist will be a heart survivor sharing her personal story and sharing why the message is so important. Men will receive red carnations with a heart health message on them to be given to a woman in their life.

 • Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association’s national call to increase awareness of heart disease and to inspire women to take charge of their heart health.
• Cardiovascular disease kills approximately 450,000 women each year, about one every minute.
• While 1 in 30 American women die of breast cancer, about 1 in 3 die from cardiovascular disease.
• More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.
• Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
• Only 1 in 5 women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat.
• Heart disease is largely preventable. In fact, 80 percent of cardiac events in women may be prevented if women make the right choices for their hearts, involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking.
