Recipes from the Heart

The entire month of February is American Heart Month. Go Red For Women, powered by the American Heart Association’s research, educates and connects millions of women of all ages. Whether it’s eating healthier, exercising more, reducing our cholesterol, or quitting smoking, Go Red helps women make these choices for themselves and each other.

Recipes for the Heart is a 100-page, four-color magazine cookbook with recipes that follow the American Heart Association’s diet and lifestyle recommendations. The cookbook can help women enjoy a balanced, healthy diet and reduce their risks for heart disease and stroke. It also includes important information on risk factors and prevention.

The restaurant, Cheap is raising funds for the American Heart Association during February. Every Thursday, Cheap will donate 25% of the proceeds from food.

Recipes for the Heart is part of Go Red For Women, a movement that raises women’s awareness of their No. 1 killer, heart disease, and take action against it.   The magazine includes 47 new, easy-to-follow heart-healthy recipes, along with 24 four-color recipe photos, cooking tips and more to help women choose healthier foods and make healthier meals.   Recipes for the Heart is affordable and easily accessible at grocery store checkout stands nationwide starting Feb. 16, 2010, while supplies last.    Starting March 2, 2010, the magazine cookbook will be available at www.shopgored.org while supplies last.

Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association’s national call to increase awareness of heart disease and to inspire women to take charge of their heart health.

• Cardiovascular disease kills approximately 450,000 women each year, about one every minute.
• While 1 in 30 American women die of breast cancer, about 1 in 3 die from cardiovascular disease.
• More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.
• Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
• Only 1 in 5 women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat.
• Heart disease is largely preventable. In fact, 80 percent of cardiac events in women may be prevented if women make the right choices for their hearts, involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking.
