In recognition of National Diabetes Awareness Month, Tampa Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has served the Tampa community by bringing nationally recognized diabetes advocates, Mother Love, and twice the past president of the American Diabetes Association, Dr. James Gavin in the past three years.  In addition, the chapter has hosted life skills cooking and nutrition education programs for the mothers and children at the Alpha House of Tampa.  As nutrition education is an important component of diabetes prevention, this year the focus is diabetes awareness and childhood obesity prevention. The organization has repeatedly demonstrated commitment to the success of youth and community at large, and understand that healthy youth today generate the opportunities for successful youth tomorrow.

About Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.:
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is the world's largest public service organization of college-educated women of predominantly African American descent.  For the past 98 years, our sisterhood has implemented programs to motivate and empower communities toward improvement in academics, economics, physical and mental health, politics, and international awareness. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and DELTA, Inc. are private, non-profit organizations whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities.  The Tampa Alumnae Chapter has designed programs to uplift and empower the Tampa Bay community since 1947.  Our members understand that stimulating change can be challenging and that together communities achieve more. Our visibility and involvement as change agents is evident locally, state wide, and nationally as our membership includes Tampa's own State Senator, Arthenia Joyner, Florida's first African American Congressional Representative since Reconstruction, Carrie Meek, and even our nation's current Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin.  Please review our programs on our chapter website, www.dstta.com and our national website, www.deltasigmatheta.org.
