The Komen 3-Day for the Cure
Video: "60 Miles Closer to the Cure"
By: Veronica Young
The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the CureTM is an amazing 60-mile journey that helps mothers, sisters, spouses, and friends get one step closer to a world without breast cancer. Join us for three inspirational days where together we'll walk so long, so far, and with so much hope, the world will hear our footsteps.
Everyone who participates in the Komen 3-Day for the Cure discovers her (or his!) own personal meaning, regardless of their size, age, athletic ability or lack thereof. For some, it's the overwhelming pride that comes from completing what they thought was impossible. For others, it's the joy of doing something so big and bold they know they've made a difference. And for many, it's the opportunity to bond with loved ones or forge new friendships that last a lifetime. The net proceeds from the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure? are invested in breast cancer research and community programs.

For me personally, this is my 5th time taking this 3 day, 60 mile walk. Each year, I meet more and more women and men who inspire me to keep moving forward in this journey... Fighters and survivors give me hope. Families and friends of those who have lost someone they love give me drive. Sixty miles, indeed, is far. Walkers battle heat, sore legs, and worse - blisters.
I will never forget something that happened to me two years ago as I was walking. It was the third day. It was unbelievably hot for October, and I was tired and quickly losing steam. Normally, we stop for breaks and water every few miles. However, it didn't seem there was a break or relief in sight. I rounded a corner and made my way toward a park near the Northeast neighborhood in St. Pete. Standing on the sidewalk was a woman - she was clapping and crying. She shouted with all her might, "Thank you, walkers! Thank you! I am a breast cancer survivor!"
It was at that very moment that my soreness and tiredness left my body. I realized that what I was feeling at that time was absolutely nothing compared to what she had been through. Thanking me? No way. Anything I would go through during those three days was nothing compared to breast cancer. I would walk the world over to help find a cure.
