The New Year means a new opportunity to take charge of your health and well being. Here are some simple but important ways you can improve your health and prevent serious illness.
. Eat right
. Stay active- exercise
. See your doctor at least once a year - even if you feel good
. Take your medicines as prescribed, and if you have a problem doing so talk to your doctor

The most important thing you can do is take charge of your own health - partner with your doctor and take an active role in your well being. For example, understand the medicines you are taking and why, and don't stop taking medicines on your own. Instead talk to your doctor first.

If you're a smoker - quit today! Smoking is behind so many health conditions affecting the cardiovascular system etc.

High blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes are the most common conditions mostly everyone will develop one or more of these conditions as they age.  Your goal for 2010 should be slowing down the regression of your health by preventing and controlling these health conditions.

Start by knowing the right number for your blood pressure and work with your doctor on a plan to get it close to the optimal level through exercise, a low-sodium diet and medication if needed. 

Ttaking charge of your health doesn't have to mean taking all the fun out of life. For example, you can join an exercise class with friends, attend a healthy cooking demo or a local expo, health fair or wellness event.
