A good meal, warm bed and clean clothes are the basic needs many Americans take for granted. But millions of children worldwide go without food, shelter and clothing every day. Added to that, they are parentless and lacking adequate medical care. Recent statistics show that 47% of the world's children live in poverty.
Now, a new survey just released shows an overwhelming number of Americans (66%) believe the U.S. has an obligation to help poor children around the world. As a matter of fact, nearly 31% of those surveyed said that aid to the globe's poorest children should be our nation's number one charitable priority.
The President and CEO of ChildFund International, Anne Lynam Goddard says the survey news is heartening, especially in light of a challenging economy in the U.S. The survey was sponsored by ChildFund which is a U.S-based global child development agency.
So what should we know? How can one person make a difference? Goddard says you'd be surprised. A bicycle for one girl in India, a pair of shoes for a child in Sri Lanka, a chair for a classroom in Kenya - these are small items that can add up to a big difference in someone's life.
