Imagine: You're awoken at night with slight twitches in one of your limbs. Your speech begins to slur. You're fatigued by small tasks, and suddenly begin to fall inexplicably. You have trouble picking up papers or even using a pen. You seek medical counsel, but are given no satisfactory answers. That is often just the beginning of the devastating journey of a patient with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Within a short time, many patients find themselves wheel-chair bound, unable to communicate, and trapped inside of a body that can no longer function.
The deadly disease affects the motor neurons in a person's brain and spinal cord. When the motor neurons die, the muscles waste away. Gradually, a person is robbed of the ability to walk, speak, eat, and eventually breathe. All the while, the mind remains sharp and aware of the total paralysis that is quickly setting in. Upon diagnosis, doctors give ALS patients only two to five years to live. There is no cause and no cure for ALS. The disease shows no partiality. It can strike anyone. Regardless of your age, gender, or ethnicity, you could become a victim who hears the doctor say, "You have ALS."
The ALS Association is the only national non-profit health organization dedicated solely to the fight against this catastrophic disease. We are a group of individuals who are compassionate, committed, and relentless in the fight to defeat ALS. We are family members and friends who have seen the effects of a deadly disease and want to inspire you to make a difference.
The ALS Association Florida Chapter offers care to over 600 ALS patients living in Florida and funds research to find the cause and cure for ALS. We are part of a nation-wide network of local ALS Association chapters with the same vision a world without ALS.
Through care, advocacy, research, education and support we work to empower those with ALS to live fuller lives. The Association provides critical assistance for patients and their families at every stage of the disease through patient care management, assistive technology, a medical equipment loan program, respite care, support groups and multidisciplinary ALS clinics.
Every year, we invest millions of dollars in research conducted by the best and brightest scientists in the world. Because of the support of foundations, corporate partners, and individuals just like you, we can continue to give help and hope to those facing this devastating disease.
